Here was the root of the Corinthians’ problems. For them the death of Christ was not central; the love of Christ was not in control. Their focus was themselves. This passage is very serious. To share in the Lord’s Supper was – and is – a great privilege, and must never be taken lightly or carelessly. The consequences of doing so are weighty: we bring God’s judgement upon ourselves. Everyone must therefore examine themselves and their lives thoroughly before coming to Holy Communion. The attitude of our hearts is more important than what we wear. However, the way in which we dress (neatly, untidily, to attract the attention of the opposite sex etc.) is generally an indication of what is in our hearts.
