Another intimidation killing in Sinai town
A solider guarding a church in El-Arish was shot dead on 31 January, in what appeared to be another attack designed to intimidate Christians in the isolated Sinai town.
The 21-year-old soldier was shot and killed by a sniper while he was on duty guarding one of the town’s churches.
A series of violent, targeted attacks on Copts by Islamic State militants in February 2017 saw the town’s entire population of Christians flee en-masse.
Although some families have subsequently returned to El-Arish, several Christians have been murdered; earlier this month, a 27-year-old Copt was shot dead in the street in El-Arish by masked men, after they recognised him as a Christian.
