Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)
An American who came to live in Nigeria brought with him all his electrical equipment. He fixed everything in his house, and prepared to enjoy himself. Immediately, however, all the electrical equipment was ruined. He had forgotten that the voltage in Nigeria is not the same as that in America, and that therefore he needed a transformer.
We need to be transformed. The transformer is Jesus Christ. He, and only he can transform us through the power of the Holy Spirit. This transformation is an inward matter: it concerns the heart as well as the mind, and involves a total transformation of our attitudes and our character. The effect, however, will be seen outwardly, as you begin to live as a child of God. There will be no room now for jealousy, anger, pride, hurt or slander; you will forgive. You will be working against the systems of the world and against a huge tide. It will never be easy, and people will call you names. Sometimes you will wonder if you are doing the right things. Your mind must be renewed and you must be transformed. This is an ongoing, everyday process, a gradual development. When someone offends you, you will begin to notice the difference. Formerly your natural self would have reacted. Now you take it calmly in a Christ-like manner. This is even so in the family, between man and wife.
