Colossians 1:24-2:7 One Focus!
We have been seeing the apostle Paul’s deep concern that the Corinthian church should be built up as one body in the truth. Paul had a real passion for the gospel: “Him we proclaim, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man mature in Christ. For this I toil, striving with all the energy which he mightily inspires within me” (verses 28-29). Behind these words can be sensed a tremendous urgency, a pouring out of energy: this, this one task was Paul’s reason for living; his motivation; his everything! Here is the heart of Paul. His focus is fixed on Christ alone, and his urgent task is to proclaim the gospel. With the help of his colleagues he is determined to teach “everyone” so that each person can become a mature member of Christ’s body. To this end he toils strenuously, never giving up. The ability to do this, his energy, his persistence and his strength all come from Christ himself. Christ has given him the work and Christ equips him to do it. The prophecy of Isaiah 40:31 was being fulfilled in Paul, as it has been in the lives of many men and women of God throughout the ages: “they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
