Sword-wielding attacker unmasked as would-be IS terrorist

Indonesian police have revealed that the man who attacked a church service in Java on Sunday had attempted to travel to Syria to fight with Islamic State.

The 23-year-old Muslim student had applied to travel to Syria, but had been denied. The Indonesian national police chief stated, “He ended up launching his attack here.”

Investigations to determine whether the attacker was operating alone, or as part of a group, are ongoing.

A pastor and three other people were injured in the attack which took place during a service at a church in Sleman on Sunday 11 February.
